This year marks Delta Air Lines' 100th anniversary. Since its first flights in 1925, Delta has become one of North America's largest airlines. It now operates flights to over 290 locations worldwide, flying nearly 200 million passengers annually. The airline’s 100,000 employees are dedicated to providing the best flight experience possible (Delta Air Lines, 2025). One key aspect Delta emphasizes during this centennial celebration is its commitment to safety by developing a strong safety management system.
In 2017, Delta Air Lines received the Federal Aviation Administration’s Validation for its exemplary safety management program (Delta Air Lines, 2023). As part of Delta, the Aviation Safety Management Program is committed to safety practices. Delta has been dedicated to developing a culture of leadership where all employees focus on accountability, care, and communication. It fosters a just culture to give employees the confidence and security to report hazards and problems that arise. Furthermore, Delta has joined a global initiative to enhance safety standards within the international aviation community, collaborating with other airlines in signing the International Air Transport Association's Safety Charter (Delta Air Lines, 2023).
Aviation programs must assess the effectiveness of the procedures and policies they implement to ensure they are effective (Stroeve S., et al. 2022). Delta implements routine audits that evaluate whether its Safety Management system effectively reduces safety risk. It also uses audits to ensure it complies with the best safety practices. Audits help Delta maintain the safety management system's effectiveness and ensure that ground and maintenance operations in all its locations live up to Delta’s safety standards.
